History

ADP, Inc. was founded in 1949 by Henry Taub, an accountant who was frustrated with the manual process of calculating payroll for his clients. Taub saw an opportunity to automate the process using the new technology of punched card machines. He started with just one client, but his payroll processing service quickly caught on, and by the mid-1950s, ADP had thousands of clients across the United States.

In the 1960s, ADP began to expand internationally, opening offices in Canada and Europe. The company also continued to develop new products and services, including computerized payroll processing and time and attendance tracking.

In 1974, ADP went public, listing its shares on the New York Stock Exchange. By the early 1980s, the company had become a leading provider of payroll processing services and was expanding into other areas of human resources management, such as benefits administration and retirement planning.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, ADP continued to expand its range of services, including adding new outsourcing solutions such as tax and compliance management and professional employer organization services. The company also acquired several other firms in the HR management space, including Time & Labor Management (1993), Paychex Payroll Services (1999), and ProBusiness (2003).

In 2011, ADP announced that it would spin off its brokerage services unit, ADP Broker-Dealer, as a separate publicly traded company called Broadridge Financial Solutions. This move allowed ADP to focus more on its core business of HR management solutions.

Today, ADP is one of the largest HR management companies in the world, serving businesses of all sizes across multiple industries. The company has over 860,000 clients and operates in more than 140 countries. ADP continues to invest heavily in technology and innovation, developing new products and services to help businesses manage their human resources more efficiently and effectively.
