Cloudflare is a web performance and security company that provides online services to protect and accelerate websites online. Its online platforms include Cloudflare CDN which distributes content around the world to speed up websites, Cloudflare optimizer which enables web pages with ad servers and third-party widgets to download Snappy software on mobiles and computers. CloudFlare security that protects websites from a range of online threats including spam, SQL injection, and DDOS, Cloudflare analytics that gives insight into website’s traffic including threats and search engine crawlers. Keyless SSL that allows organizations to keep secure sockets layer (SSL) keys private, and Cloudflare applications that help its users install web applications on their websites. Lee Holloway, Matthew Prince, and Michelle Zatlyn founded Cloudflare in 2009, with its headquarters in San Francisco California.


History

2009: The company was venture-capital funded.

2010: Cloudflare was launched at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in September 2010.

2013: In March, it defended The Spamhaus Project from a DDoS attack that exceeded 300 Gbit/s.

2014: In November, it reported another massive DDoS attack with independent media sites targeted at 500 Gbit/s.

2017: Cloudflare created the Athenian Project to ensure free protection of online election infrastructures to local and state governments, as well as domestic and foreign political campaigns.

2019: In August, Cloudflare submitted its S-1 filing for IPO on the New York Stock Exchange under the stock ticker NET. It opened for public trading on September 13, at $15 per share. On September 6, Wikipedia was the victim of a DDoS attack.

2020: The beta for macOS and Windows was announced. In June, it mitigated a DDoS attack that peaked at 754 million packets per second. More than 1,000 users and organizations were participating in Project Galileo.

2021: In January, the company established the Project Fair Shot initiative, a free tool that enables global health organizations to maintain a digital queue for COVID-19 vaccinations. In August, it announced it had in July stopped a DDoS attack three times larger than any they'd recorded.


Mission

Cloudflare's mission is to help build a better internet. As a proactive action, our cryptography team is preparing experiments on the deployment of post-quantum algorithms at Cloudflare scale.
